I learned a long time ago that a simple act that can make a significant difference, not only in my outlook and overall happiness but in the lives of others: smiling.
If I asked you to take a look in the mirror right now, what would you see staring back at you?
The Value of a Smile
Researcher Andrew Newberg suggests “We know that smiling is a very powerful gesture; we were doing a study looking at different symbols, and the symbol that was rated with the highest positive emotional content was the smiley face.”
Other studies suggest that there are numerous psychological and physical benefits that are directly related to a smile. Some data even points to how a smile relates to a successful career, better relationships and even the longevity of one’s life.
Behind every great moment is a smile. Think of any joyful occasion in your life – your graduation, a new job, wedding day, the birth of a child, a promotion at work; or think about the last time you picked someone up from the airport or had a great customer experience. I’ll bet these moments were all captured with a smile.

I change my voice mail greeting on a daily basis. Yes, daily. Before I hit ‘record’, I consciously make myself smile and then I replay it so I know what every caller will hear. I regularly receive positive comments about my phone greeting – people often comment “I love your message.”
Do you think they hear the smile in my voice?
Yes, a smile changes everything, not only the appearance of our face but the tone in our voice. In business, a smile can make the difference between good service and raving fans. Never underestimate the power of a smile.
Now, let’s go back to the mirror…did you know that what you see is what others see (and hear)? That’s right, what you see is what they hear. Put a smile on your face.
I encourage you to smile on purpose, knowing that a smile you share can make a real difference in someone’s day. Mother Teresa once said, “We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.”
